In 557, Yuwen Jue, i.e. King Xiao Min Di afterward, overturned the Western Wei Dynasty and established Northern Zhou. Northern Zhou became a powerful state in the time of Yu Wenyong, i.e. King Zhou Wudi. In 577, Zhou Wudi annexed the Northern Qi Dynasty and unified the north of China. While the state of Tujue lying to its north grew up. To be concentrated on Northern Qi, Zhou Wudi married daughters of his family to Tujue. But the marriage between the two dynasties didn't stop Tujue's invasion into Northern Zhou. So in 579, King Zhou Jingdi repaired thoroughly the walls built in the Northern Qi Dynasty.
